I have had little success finding a premium 175 grain bullet for my 7mm Mag, for elk, moose. 160 grain is available but not 175. You can buy the cheap 175 stuff @ Walmart, Canadian Tire etc. Spoke with the guy behind the counter at my local sporting goods store and his thought was that size bullet was not the most efficient choice for my gun.
Any thoughts?

You don't really need a 175gr in a 7mm RM for elk and moose. I just bought some 150gr Remington Premier Scirocco Bonded bullets for mine. The energy and velocity at all ranges make the regular Express Core Lokts 175gr look a bit feeble in comparison. Having said that, I've killed several elk and moose with $25 175gr Remington Express Core Lokts, with flawless performance...but the Sciroccos are way cooler (and more than 2x the price )!

I normally use a 165 boat tail for Moose but do find it a "little" light for the bigger bulls. Federal (premium) offers a 175 grain in there Trophy Bonded Bear Claw I have no idea how this bullet performs never used it. Out of the www.russellsports.com cataloge page 121 they list for $44.99 plus tax and shipping charges. On page 120 Federal offers a 175 grain "fussion"bullet for $28.99. this is something new for them and it is a boatail bullet (my preferance).

I am sure there are more around but those two just happen to be the one's I was looking at.

165 a little light?Been knocking stuff down with a 150 Nosler Partition for years with my STW...Nuttin wrong with the 150gr Winchester Power Point Super X factory load..Don't let the deer on the box fool ya..That bullet holds together well at high speed and penetrates like a sob..

Thanks for the detailed info. Glad to know there is some variety available. Buying ammo of the web is definetly the way to go. Variety, price, big difference. I paid $70.00 a box for Barnes Triple X 160 grain at the local store. Never again. Thanks guys.

I use a 140gr TSX bullet in my 7mm Rem Magnum, and would shoot anyhting in north america with it.

One hunt with the 175gr then back to the lighter lead.But have no doubt in my mind I could harvest a buff with a 150gr NP or the 140 TSX with zero issue's..

No it is not about placement it is all about mass when it comes to bison. And of course the Fish and Game Branch has got it all wrong when they will not allow you to hunt Bison with anything LESS than 200 grain. Basicly you will be breaking the law and are now a Poacher -- illegally shooting wildlife.

A....It's 175gr or larger..B....Your last part of your post is full of crap...

If given the choice to be run over by a Chevy Astro van or a Honda accord and knowing the outcome either way in advance, I choose the Astro van!
Splitting hairs guys, shoot what the gun likes and gives you the most confidence. I shoot the 175's for everything, my partner shoots a 150. I use a solid copper triple shock bullet, he uses a bonded. We both had great results over the last few seasons and could argue for either option but why bother, mute points, it is all about what we have found to work for ourselves, confidence is under-rated.

It may be a little late to weigh in, but Federal still loads the 175 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, which is assuredly a premium bullet. However, I agree with the general sentiment that a 160 grain bullet will work just fine in your 7 RM.

I used the Federal loading for years to take moose and black bear. I have worked up a load with the bullet in more recent years. It performs quite well.
