Black bear attacks women

Many may have heard this news already, as it happened last Wednesday.

CBC
A Coquitlam, B.C., woman needed surgery to repair damage to her head, torso and arms after she was mauled by a bear in her yard Wednesday morning.

The woman, who has not been identified, was in her garden in the Westwood Plateau area when an aggressive bear entered her yard around 9:30 a.m., her neighbours told CBC News.

Police said the woman fell to the pavement of her driveway as the bear attacked. She suffered bite wounds to her arms, legs and torso before neighbours, who heard her screams, drove off the bear by throwing rocks at it.

The woman was taken to hospital, where she's believed to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP later shot the animal in a nearby yard.

"We didn't want to run the risk of having this bear run around the neighbourhood, especially after what had happened," said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Tony Farahbakhchian.

Officers said the bear was likely hunting the woman as food, and they plan to do a necropsy to try to determine why.

It is going to be a bad bear year I am afraid. The long cold spring has left the berry crop in pretty poor shape around here. The bears I have been seeing do not look fat and happy. In fact they appear to be downright grumpy.

I know all about grumpy bears, 2 of the bears that were transported away from work here on July 21 returned to the site yesterday. We'll just have to see if they behave themselves.

Ya i just visited the island and the bears out their are all losing there fear of humans. Most of them would go into our camps everynight and search for food, half of the time they trashed the camps... the C.O came and re located a few tho.

I was up on a fishing trip to Star Lake near Gold River last week. That lake can sure be hit and miss when it comes to fishing by the way...

Anyways, one of the neighbors at the place I was staying, said that the Co's had killed or moved 14 bears in the last few weeks, right from the town limits. I don't know if he was exaggerating or not, but I did see one big mother of a blackie walking down the street about 60 yards away, when returning from a dart tournament at the local legion. It was garbage day the next morningy, and they seem to know the exact night to do a little scrounging. At least I'm glad they aren't grizzly's.

We didn't see the usual number of bears that we spot on the drive in to G.R. Maybe they were hiding in the shade, as it was a cooker that day.

the day after the attack, again in coquilam, a bear broke into a home and ate all the food on the kitchen counter. That one was killed also. Bears are all over the place eating garbage, and getting hit by cars, etc.

I cant confirm this but I heard from some other area residents that the woman had been feeding the bear in the days prior to the mauling.

She wasnt feeding the bear

Thats BS, She had an airhorn in her back yard she used to scare them off. Bottom line too many bears, there should be an organized government hunt to reduce the amount

I agree that there should be a cull on them also, there are just waaaaay too many.Problem is compounded in the lower mainland where they cut down more of the surrounding forests daily to build more houses. more bears than ever plus shrinking natural habitat is not a good recipe.

And what good what that do?
Why should I endorse the government to spend my TAX $$$$ so some a**hole yuppie can buy a million dollar house way up on the Hill and expect to have The Government Exterminators come over and remove the Pesky Bear ...who was there long before us Pesky Humans came a cutting down them trees, etc...
That kinda thinking Sir is far from the correct action, If in fact she was feeding the Bear and it is dead now btw, she should be fined heavly for her stupidity and the fine going to the "Be Bear Aware" program, and by that I do not mean posting a few signs out and about or cute bumper stickers either.

A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear.

Your correct

Not only a cull, but you are correct, i see people getting warnings multiple times on having garbage out. There shoud be no warnings, fines, and if you get re fined the fine should go up $$$. And if one of my kids get hurt from a bear that keeps getting fed garbage from people leaving it out, they should have criminal charges of negligence. But there should be a hunt also
