Thumbs up SPOT

So far I am really impressed with these things. While Globalstar's sat-phone service sucks big time these little tracking and simple messaging units work like a hot damn! Anyone who gets one should also "splurge" and activate them with the tracking option.

Go here for more info.

Here is a screen shot of a SPOT email message that the unit sends out every 10 - 15 minutes when in tracking mode.

It's nice to see that you were pulled off to the side of the road while using the phone.

Yup

I heard about these things for the first time writing about new items at at Pacific Marine Expo in Seattle last year.

I know my wife wished I had something like that for the past 20 years when I went off on solo hunting trips.

Here is a link to a live "Shared" page I created.

http://share.findmespot.com/shared/...0xGORKccOxY IY

This is an easy way to share your whereabouts with others who only need to check the website to see where you have been. It shows the last 7 days and is set up to show Tracking, OK & Help messages as well as 911 calls.

The more I use this thing the more I like it!

You can zoom right it in most locations and if you select the hybrid view it will show google Maps overlaid on Google Earth. The terrain view is pretty neat too.

What does this system cost? i heard thats there is a yearly fee.

I'm really interested in this unit,

how long is the battery life?

If you turn it on and leave it and hunt for the days your out it will set out waypoints for friends and family to view online automaticly?

thanks

I just bought one before our recent Dall hunt and was also pretty impressed... although I didn't opt for the tracking coverage.

It wasn't hard to persuade my wife to let me purchase a unit as she's a bit of a worrier.

We checked in once a day wherever we set up camp. Accuracy was incredible!!

Once back at the lake we pushed the "Help" button to be picked up one day early and presto ....the plane was there 6 hours later......we just didn't know it was coming .

The unit is now going to find it's way into my day pack as I mostly hunt solo.........at least locally.

They are about $169.00 and about 150 bucks a year for the basic service and the tracking option.

The batteries are supposed to last for 14 days in full tracking mode. It uses 2 Lithium AA bateries.

Right now Fire Eagle has a special on where you can get a discount on the SPOT unit as well as free service for a year.

Thumbs down humm

The web site doesnt seem to work for Canadian addresses. Also the price keeps going up $20 when you put it in the shopping cart. See a Candaian logo in the bottom left corner going to try that next. Let you know.

O K well it doesn't work unless you want to pay more it lists for 149.99 US with free shipping, then you have to go to the Canadian site and it is 169.99 can. then add 19.00 shipping and taxes for 22.68 for a total of 211.67 so it just plain sucks to be Canadian === no FN deal

Nope. I didn't know about that....it may have come later.

$100/yr for the basic service and $7/yr for up to $100,000 in rescue fees which, usually we don't have to pay here in BC(unless you like to ski OB).....but since this is a world-wide service it's certainly worth the extra $7.

As Boo stated it's another $50/yr for the optional tracking service.

That is a heck of a good unit to have. So it has it's own screen as well so you can use it as a GPS?, or is it just a tracking device?

It is tracking/check in only.

The 3 check in modes are: I'm OK, I need Help, and 911.
The first 2 can be set up by the user to send a pre-recorded message to your pre-selected contact people via email or cell phone text message. The 911 call goes to SPOT's emergency centre who then contacts your pre-selected contact people as well as your local 911/emergency dispatch centre.
