I have a serious squirrel problem here and was wondering what you would recommend? I was thinking .22 as I do not have a pellet gun and there is a large green space behind my property. These guys have gone past traps and my lab and they are tearing the heck out of my shed. They can eat through chicken wire I have discovered, and I am seriously considering the final solution for the group of them. Have any of you ever had to deal with these furry deamons before? Any advice would be appreciated.

Check with your local Conservation Officer as these red "tree rats" are protected and you will require permission before you try to get rid of them.


Once you have the blessings of the CO service the easiest way to get rid of them is to use a snare. Tie several brass snare wire loops on a running pole stretched between a couple of trees the squirrels use..

I just assumed that you could deal with them like a rat. I can't believe they are protected in any way as there are dozens of them in my area. I will try the snare advice as they seem pretty wise about any kind of trap I have put out. I will speak to the CO's and see what they say. Either way I have to try something or my dog is going to have a heart attack soon. Thanks.

As I was writing that last post my dog has climbed half way up our birch tree trying to get one of the little bastages. They sit on a log pile taunting me with that high pitched chirp, this must end.

As hard as it is to believe they are protected. One of the members of our site got fined a few years back for shooting problem squirrels.

I was of the understanding that squirrels could be taken on ones property if they were damaging it.

Check the regs....but I am pretty certain.

it all depends on the species the grey is a sched C pest I believe

I would check and see if the squirrels are the right species.

I will guarantee there are nothing but native Red Squirrels in Prince George.

You are right they are red tree squirrels and it seems they are protected to some extent. Thanks for the heads up as I want to avoid and CO issues.
